The Rock Beauty (Holacanthus tricolor) is a striking species of marine angelfish known for its vibrant yellow and black coloration. Found primarily in the western Atlantic Ocean, from the coasts of Florida and the Bahamas down to Brazil, this fish often resides in coral reefs at depths between 10 and 80 feet.
Physical Characteristics
Coloration: Rock Beauties have bright yellow bodies with contrasting deep black on the head and mid-section, making them easily distinguishable. Their dorsal and caudal fins are also yellow, while their pectoral fins have a slight blue tint.
Size: They can grow up to 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) in length.
Lifespan: In the wild, they typically live around 10–15 years, but can live longer in captivity with proper care.
Behavior and Diet
Rock Beauties are somewhat territorial and may exhibit aggression toward other fish, especially other angelfish. They are omnivorous, feeding on a mix of sponges, algae, tunicates, and even small invertebrates.
Habitat and Care (In Captivity)
In home aquariums, Rock Beauties can be challenging to keep due to their specific dietary needs, especially their reliance on sponges, which is much easier now due to the angel formula foods now available. They require a large tank with plenty of hiding spots and high water quality to thrive.
