Blue-spotted Grouper – Cephilophlus argus

The Blue Spot Hind Grouper, scientifically known as Cephalopholis argus, is a stunning marine fish known for its vibrant coloration and distinct blue spots. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, it inhabits coral reefs and rocky coastal areas, usually at depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters.

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration: Primarily dark brown with numerous small, electric blue spots covering its body, including fins and head.

  • Size: Can grow up to around 40 cm (16 inches), though it is more commonly found at smaller sizes.

  • Shape: Robust and slightly elongated, with a rounded tail fin and a large mouth, typical of groupers.

Behavior and Diet

Blue Spot Hind Groupers are carnivorous, primarily feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Like many groupers, they are ambush predators, using their camouflage to blend with the coral environment before striking prey.
