Indian Triggerfish – Melichthys indicus

The Indian Triggerfish (Melichthys indicus) is a robust species known for its adaptability and striking appearance, resembling the Black Durgon Triggerfish (Melichthys niger) but distinguished by its more limited range in the Indian Ocean. It often inhabits tropical reefs and coastal waters, preferring depths where plankton is abundant.

Key Characteristics of the Indian Triggerfish:

  • Size: Typically grows up to about 10–12 inches (25–30 cm).

  • Coloration: Generally dark with shades ranging from dark brown to black, with faint iridescent blue or green markings along the fins and edges, similar to the Black Durgon but sometimes with subtler contrasts.

  • Habitat: Found throughout the Indian Ocean, especially around coral reefs and rocky coastal areas, usually at depths between 3 and 100 feet (1–30 meters).

  • Diet: Feeds mainly on plankton, but also consumes small invertebrates and algae, making it an omnivore.

  • Behavior: The Indian Triggerfish is somewhat territorial, often defending its space within the reef; however, it is generally peaceful when not directly provoked.
